Karni Mata Temple, located in Deshnok, about 30 kilometers from Bikaner, Rajasthan, is one of the most unique and revered temples in India. Dedicated to Karni Mata, a 15th-century Hindu mystic and an incarnation of Goddess Durga, the temple is best known for its thousands of sacred rats, which are worshipped by devotees.

The temple’s legend states that Karni Mata once tried to bring a devotee’s dead son back to life but was told by Yama (the god of death) that the boy had already been reincarnated. She then declared that her devotees would never face Yama’s judgment and would instead be reborn as rats before being reincarnated as humans. This belief led to the temple becoming home to thousands of rats, known as kabas, which are considered holy and protected.
The temple, built in Mughal and Rajput architectural styles, features an impressive marble facade, intricately carved silver doors, and a gold-plated sanctum. Devotees offer food to the rats, believing that eating food nibbled by them brings good luck. Spotting a rare white rat among them is considered especially auspicious.
The temple sees the most visitors during the annual Karni Mata Temple Fair, held twice a year, during Navratri in March-April and September-October. Devotees from all over India come to seek Karni Mata’s blessings for prosperity and protection.
Karni Mata Temple’s unique blend of spirituality, folklore, and architectural beauty makes it a fascinating destination. Whether one visits out of devotion or curiosity, the temple offers an unforgettable experience that reflects the deep-rooted traditions and faith of Rajasthan.
