How We do Paint Pottery:
PAINT POTTERY PROCESSES
MAKE YOURSELF AT HOME
-
Find a table (we often share tables here, but please be polite and ask if it’s ok to share the table)
-
You can order food and beverage at the barista bar before, during or after painting pottery
-
Find your piece of pottery and bring them to your table ($$ Prices are located on the bottom of the pieces and range from $5-$100
PREPARE YOURSELF AND YOUR PIECE FOR PAINTING/GLAZING (WE CALL WONDERGLAZE PAINT AND GLAZE (SAME THING)
-
Go to the Paint Pottery Tool Shelves near the front windows
-
Gather the things you need and take them to your table (empty paint pallet, a small sponge, water bowl (with water from the jugs next to them), Paint Brush(s), and if desired templates/pencils
-
We have aprons available hanging near the lockers (follow the footsteps on the floor)
-
Use a damp clean sponge to wipe your piece clean of any oils or debris and let dry 2 minutes
SELECT YOUR COLORS: The Wonderglaze shelf is color coded and our Paint Color Pallets show what the colors look like after applying three coats (letting them dry for 2-3 minutes between coats)
-
Select the colors you’d like to use and dispense them into your paint pallet tray (a little goes a long way, but if you’re going to coat your entire piece with one color it’s ok to take that color bottle to your table until your done with that color. Please return it to the numbered location on the shelves)
-
Colors can be blended (just like water colors)
PAINT YOUR PIECE:
-
There are many different techniques for painting pottery. Please take a look at our finished pieces shelf to get ideas. Also, there’s tons of YouTube Videos showing amazing concepts and execution.
-
We have “Designer Liner” pens for very detailed design use that can be checked out at the Paint Pottery Desk or the Barista Station. We require a $10 deposit to be held on your Tab during use to ensure return of the pen with the pin in the stopper to ensure ongoing use. Any use of Designer Liners must be very fine detail and covered with Clear Coat to seal in the color.
-
If you make a mistake, don’t worry, you can use the sponge to remove any paint you’ve applied and start again.
-
Please make sure, DO NOT apply any glaze to the bottom of your piece (any part that touches a table is what we call the “Bottom.” You can use the damp sponge to remove any paint you’ve applied to the bottom prior to turning in your piece to be fired.
-
IF YOU’D LIKE THE BOTTOM TO HAVE PAINT: Please let us know and for a fee of $12 we can fire your piece on Stilts which will leave pin hole size marks on the base but allow for the color
-
FOOD SAFE: Any part of your piece that you’d like to be “Food Safe” needs to have at least one coat of paint (any color including clear will work). “Food Safe” means that the pours of the pottery have been filled and won’t hold bacteria as easily.
-
CLEAR PAINT: Clear is the same as any other color it just lacks pigment. It doesn’t make your piece more shiny when fired and it’s optional to use.
FINISHING UP (Cleaning and Paying)
-
Take all tools, brushes, etc to the pottery sink in the back (Follow the colored footsteps on the concrete floor). Please wash all tools, etc and place them in the named bins behind the sinks
-
Replace any paint bottles in the appropriate numbered shelf location for others to find the right paint in the future
-
Take a photo of your piece (even better if you initial the bottom of your piece using paint to prevent someone possibly mistakenly taking your piece for theirs)
-
Take the piece to the Barista Station or Paint Pottery Desk (if open) to pay for your piece
-
We will fire your piece in our kiln and have it ready to pick up 8 days later.
-
If you don’t pick up your piece within 38 days we will either use or donate your piece to allow for enough storage space on our shelves. Refunds will not be given after this period.
-
We require photo proof of your piece when collecting your finished piece
